Employee Considerations

In evaluating online compliance and ethics training, you should consider the following questions that your employees likely will have:

  1. Are the courses available to take 24/7 at a time convenient for me?
  2. How long will the courses take?
  3. Do I have to complete a course all in one sitting?
  4. Do I have to be a computer expert to operate the course?
  5. Can I take notes?
  6. Is there a glossary?
  7. What if I have a question?
  8. Will I receive a certificate of completion?

  1. Are the courses available to take 24/7 at a time convenient for me?
Employees dislike the inflexibility of mandatory instructor-led training, where they are ordered to attend a training session on a certain day and time regardless of their other duties. Brightline's online courses respect the competing demands on employees' time. Brightline's online courses are available to take 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, so that each employee may take the course at the time most convenient to him or her.

  2. How long will the courses take?

Consistent with industry research on e-learning, Brightline's online compliance and ethics courses generally take half the time it takes for employees to complete the same training in a classroom setting. For example, Brightline's online course, Preventing Workplace Harassment, takes about an hour to complete, with roughly an additional thirty minutes for employees who take the "Supervisors' Duties" section. Refresher courses that employees take in future years are shorter.

  3. Do I have to complete a course all in one sitting?

Employees need not complete one of Brightline's online courses in one sitting; if they exit the course, their place will be saved. When they return to the course, they will return automatically to where they left off.

  4. Do I have to be a computer expert to operate the course?

Brightline's online courses are very easy to navigate. Even novice computer users have no problems following the simple, step-by-step instructions for completing the course.

  5. Can I take notes?

Brightline's online courses provide employees with an electronic notepad that they can use to take notes during a course and print the notes out for future reference.

  6. Is there a glossary?

Brightline's courses avoid legalese and use plain-English to teach complicated legal concepts. In addition, Brightline's courses provide a glossary explaining the important terms used in the course. Employees may access this glossary at any time while taking the course.

  7. What if I have a question?

Brightline offers an "Ask the Expert" feature that allows employees to ask anonymous questions and receive answers online. An official designated by your organization or, for an additional fee, by Brightline Compliance, answers the questions. Both the question and answer are posted to a moderated whiteboard that all learners can view. In this way, individual learners can receive feedback on their questions while all learners can gain additional understanding from the questions asked by others. If your organization is not interested in using this feature, Brightline can simply provide a link to a list of "Frequently Asked Questions" instead.

  8. Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Even though Brightline's course electronically tracks who has completed the course, each employee has the option of printing out a certificate of completion to keep for his or her own records. The certificate lists the employee's name, the course he or she completed, and the date of completion.
